Butler Island is a 1,600-acre (647.5-hectare) island in the Altamaha River in McIntosh County, Georgia, United States. [1] Part of the Altamaha River Delta, the island is located 1 mi (1.6 km) south-southeast of Darien, Georgia. The Altamaha River divides in the delta, and the northernmost branch is 3.1 mi (5.0 km) long and called the Butler River.
The town was mostly destroyed in 1863 when it was burned by Union troops. Rebuilding the town started on the east side, followed by the west side. The east side of historic Darien is in the NRHP Vernon Square-Columbus Square Historic District. As of 2001, only one antebellum structure remained; otherwise the oldest buildings are from 1870 to 1910.
Darien (/ d ɛər i ˈ ɛ n /) is a city in and the county seat of McIntosh County, Georgia, United States. [5] It lies on Georgia's coast at the mouth of the Altamaha River , approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Savannah , and is part of the Brunswick, Georgia metropolitan statistical area .
