Coosaw Island is one of South Carolina's Sea Islands. It is part of Beaufort County, South Carolina. [1] The island is rural and residential. A narrow creek separates it from Lady's Island. [2] It is named for a tribe of Native Americans who inhabited the area, [3] the Coosaw band of Native Americans.
South Carolina Highway 802 (SC 802), is a 6.690-mile (10.767 km) state highway located entirely within Beaufort County, South Carolina.Also known locally as Sams Point Road, SC 802 serves as the principal arterial for Lady's Island and provides the only access to Coosaw Island.
All of the plantations gave way to military occupation. the major post on Lady's Island was "Coosaw" or "Sams' fort on the northeastern point of the Island. At this time there were about 30 plantations on the Ladys' Island. [5] The island was predominantly rural and agricultural in character for much of its history.
The area derives its name from its original inhabitants, the Coosaw band of Native Americans and their word for river, hatchie. [4] A sub-group of the Muskogees, they spoke a mixture of the Muskogee and Koasati languages. Located on the King's Highway that stretched from Boston to Charleston, Coosawhatchie was settled by trappers in the 1740s.
According to James Mooney, they called the Muskogee Creek "Ani'-Ku'sa or Ani'-Gu'sa, from Kusa, their principal town". [7] English speakers adopted "Coosa" as a frontier English version of the early Cherokee word. The contemporary Cherokee name for all Creek Indians is ani-kusa. This is also the name for Muskogee, Oklahoma: ᎫᏐᎢ, guso'i.
