The school, initially named Rivier College, was founded in 1933 as by the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary in Hudson, New Hampshire. The congregation named the college in honor of its founder, Anne-Marie Rivier. [1] In 1941, the college moved to its present campus location in Nashua. [3]
The state's three public universities are administered by the University System of New Hampshire. [1] New Hampshire is also served by a network of seven public community colleges. The oldest school in the state is Dartmouth College, a member of the Ivy League and the only New Hampshire institution founded before the American Revolution.

The St. Joseph School of Nursing is a nursing school operated by the hospital. The first four students graduated in 1910. The RN program was discontinued in 1963, replaced in 1964 with a Practical Nursing program which ran until 2013. In 2005, the school established an Associate of Science in Nursing degree program.

It is anchored by the Southern New Hampshire Medical Center (SNHMC), located in Nashua. The hospital was founded in 1893 as Nashua Memorial Hospital and is now a 188-bed regional medical facility that serves an estimated 100,000 patients a year in the southern New Hampshire region. SNHMC has over 500 primary and specialty care providers.
