North Port is a city located in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 74,793 at the 2020 US Census , [ 7 ] up from 57,357 at the 2010 US Census. [ 8 ] It is a principal city in the North Port – Bradenton – Sarasota, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area .
Wellen Park (formerly known as the West Villages [1]) is a planned community located in Sarasota County, Florida, United States.The majority of Wellen Park is located along US 41 and River Road within the city limits of North Port, with some portions of the community extending into unincorporated Sarasota County.
In the 1970s and 1980s, new residential subdivisions were being built in North Port with development by General Development Corporation (GDC). In 1982, construction crews found unearthed artifacts and human remains while constructing roads. This led to the Myakkahatchee Creek Archaeological Site, located on the western part of the park. [3]
As each community began to be developed, the developer built the roads, sewer and water plants, golf courses, marinas, other basic amenities and even operated landfills. These new communities had the feel of "company towns." When North Port was incorporated, GDC employees even made up the first City Council. [14]
The area surrounding the spring was developed as a spa in 1946, including the construction of a bathhouse. The property was sold in 1955 and the new owners began a housing development, platting 3,000 housing lots on the property. The Warm Mineral Springs Motel was opened at the entrance to the spring in 1958.
The City Council gave preliminary approval Jan. 22 to allow more residential development there, paving the way for a potential 1,350-home development. The city currently allows 500 homes the property.
