The government of the City of Los Angeles operates as a charter city (as opposed to a general law city) under the charter of the City of Los Angeles.The elected government is composed of the Los Angeles City Council with 15 city council districts and the mayor of Los Angeles, which operate under a mayor–council government, as well as several other elective offices.

Mapping L.A. was a 2009 project of the Los Angeles Times. It identified 158 cities and unincorporated areas within Los Angeles County, California. It also drew boundary lines for 114 neighborhoods within the City of Los Angeles and 42 unincorporated areas where the statistics were merged with those of adjacent cities.

Los Angeles's 4th City Council district is one of the fifteen districts in the Los Angeles City Council. It is currently represented by Democrat Nithya Raman since 2020 after she defeated David Ryu in that year's election. The district is situated in Central Los Angeles, the southern San Fernando Valley, and eastern Santa Monica Mountains.
