Macon County Courthouse is a historic county courthouse in Oglethorpe, Georgia, county seat of Macon County. It was built in 1894. [2] t is located in Courthouse Square. It is in the Romanesque architecture style. The facade is made of brick. The main portico seems to be a later addition. This entrance has four columns.
It is located in downtown Macon on the same street (two blocks west) as the William Augustus Bootle Federal Building and United States Courthouse. In 2012, the courthouse was named for J. Taylor Phillips, State Court judge from 1964 to 2012; he served as a full-time judge until 1998 when he assumed part-time senior status.
The United States District Court for the District of Georgia was one of the original 13 courts established by the Judiciary Act of 1789, 1 Stat. 73, on September 24, 1789. [2] The District was subdivided into Northern and Southern Districts on August 11, 1848, by 9 Stat. 280 .
The courtrooms, located in the former home of Sears at the mall, are set to open in 30 to 60 days and could be a big help for Macon’s justice system.
Original courthouse, seen in 1935. When the county was formed, a rude log building was soon erected to serve as the first courthouse. Measuring 18 by 24 by 20 feet (5.5 m × 7.3 m × 6.1 m), [2] it was used as a courthouse during the week, and it was available for churches to use on weekends.
The NAACP’s Macon-Bibb County Chapter, as well as disabled voters, have expressed concern with the voting location where the Board of Elections office is located, which is at Macon Mall.
