Gordon John Van Wylen (February 6, 1920 – November 5, 2020) [1] was an American engineer and educator, known for his textbooks on thermodynamics.He served as the 9th president of Hope College from 1972 to 1987 and as the 8th dean of the University of Michigan College of Engineering from 1965 to 1972.

The college's emblem is an anchor.This is drawn from a speech by Albertus van Raalte, the leader of the community, on the occasion of the founding of the Pioneer School in 1851: "This is my anchor of hope for this people in the future," (an allusion to Hebrews 6:19).
