Robert Taylor (born Spangler Arlington Brugh; August 5, 1911 – June 8, 1969) was an American film and television actor and singer who was one of the most popular leading men of cinema. Taylor began his career in films in 1934 when he signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. He won his first leading role the following year in Magnificent Obsession.
The last-minute substitute was a young man named Spangler Brugh, who had appeared anonymously in screen tests opposite young actresses. MGM called in "the test boy" for Buried Loot, and his performance resulted in promotion to feature films, stardom, and a 24-year tenure at the studio. His screen name became Robert Taylor.
