The Market Place covers an area of 165 acres (670,000 m 2) [3] and has more than 120 stores, restaurants, cafes and theaters. Designed by Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta, it consists of monumental but extremely simplified cubic forms, with anchor stores marked by massive towers roughly 70 feet (21 m) high displaying the store name.
Walker Scott, the San Diego–based department store chain was an anchor, as was Mayfair Markets, TG&Y discount stores joining later. At launch, the center was 1,200-foot (370 m) long on a single-axis mall, had 200,000 square feet (19,000 m 2) of gross leasable area, 40 stores, and 30 acres (120,000 m 2) of parking for 1,250 cars.

The Vintage Faire Mall opened in March 1977. The original anchor stores at the mall were Weinstock's and Sears..
