Do NOT book rental vehicles thru Kayak. We tried it on a trip to LA and Kayak produced a search result with what we wanted… so I paid, including for insurance, but the rental office was miles from the airport, closed when we arrived, and no one picked up the phone on the help line. We went to enterprise booked and paid full price for a car.

Kayak is a good aggregator to start with, but your best best is to go the CR rental sites directly for a better idea of prices and availability. Reply reply Prestigious-Ad2179

Hey guys. So I am trying to find a good price for car rental for 10 days from the Chicago area. I also need unlimited mileage. I did a kayak search And it came up with some pretty good results. But the ones that have cheaper pricing say "surprise agency" or "car 8 rental" I have tried to Google and find out what surprise agency means.

Option 1: I found a good deal on a car rental on my credit card's travel portal (Capital One). It required me to pre-pay for the rental, but it is fully refundable. I believe Capital One uses Hopper on the back end. Option 2: I also found a great deal on Kayak that is non-refundable.

I used Kayak to reserve a car for one week. This price seems unreal though, it's very inexpensive. Kayak even gave me an official reference/booking number (both from their partnership with Priceline and from the car rental agency, National).

Sometimes you can get a lower price or better flexibility or better guarantees with the 3d party than with the rental co itself. And if that 3d party is a reputable company you may actually be better protected than when booking with a small local rental co directly.

I reserve rental cars both from the rental company (often Hertz) and through a third party, usually Expedia. I never prepay because plans change and I don't want a hassle over a refund. So it's always "book now pay later". Never had a problem with getting the car, even when I've made the reservation six months ahead of time.

Are the prices for small car rentals on Kayak, Orbitz, etc accurate? 10$ per day, unlimited miles, not much in the way of extra fees? Specifically one way rentals to Florida from New York. Even with optional boxes checked, comes out to like 150$ for a week rental?
