Westbury Square was a shopping center located on a 7.5-acre (3.0 ha) site near the intersection of Chimney Rock Road and West Bellfort Avenue, [1] in the Westbury neighborhood in the Brays Oaks district of Southwest Houston, Texas. [2] It was built as a part of Westbury Section 3. [3]
It was bounded by Interstate 69/U.S. Route 59, Brays Bayou, Hillcroft Avenue, and U.S. Route 90A (South Main), including areas within the City of Houston and excluding areas within the Westbury subdivision. Sunnyside, the oldest African-American community in southern Houston, was first platted in 1912. [5] When the community opened in the 1910s, H. H. Holmes, the founder, gave the land the name Sunny Side. [6] By the 1940s area residents established a water district and a volunteer fire department. The City of Houston annexed Sunnyside in 1956.
