Central Connecticut State University was founded in 1849 as the State Normal School to train teachers. [9] It was the sixth normal school in the United States and is the oldest public university in Connecticut. [10] [11] It ran until 1867 when the school was temporarily closed due to opposition in the Connecticut General Assembly. [12]
In 1850, a new building to house the Normal School was built in New Britain. U.S. President Jimmy Carter became the first recipient on April 16, 1985, [2] receiving a Doctor of Humane Letters.
For the first time, Central Connecticut State University in New Britain will hold its graduation exercises off campus. They will be at the Hartford Civic Center May 28 [1994].
