If you look at the left-side of the photo, you can see relatively fresh breakage and the internal structure of one of the chambers that shows that the ammonite is essentially aragonite (Or calcite, it's debatable). How deep it goes is another question, but it seems to be that there is a relatively thick layer, at least.

  9. Texas Ammonite Hunting in Spring Creek - The Fossil Forum

    www.thefossilforum.com/topic/74073-texas-ammonite-hunting...

For Spring break we headed down to Texas for a vacation. My daughter has a love of ammonites and prehistoric marine reptiles, so I thought Texas would be a great place to hunt some fossils as well as do some general vacationing. We spent our first 5 days in Sherman as it seemed most centrally loc...

Some assorted ammonite fragments. I believe I have tentatively identified the small ammonites as Oxytropidoceras sp. and the larger ones as Engonoceras sp. - but any correction to that would be greatly appreciated. All these fossils were in the Goodland Formation (Cretaceous Limestone 105-103 mya) in Tarrant County, North Texas.

The Ammonites of Madagascar are globally renowned, with numerous well-preserved genera and species. However, I've never seen one of these specimens in an unpolished state, as most are heavily polished. Does anyone have a photo of these fossils in a more "natural" condition?
