Sarao Motors was established in 1953 by Leonardo Sarao, a former kalesa driver turned mechanic, as a small automotive shop with an initial budget of ₱700 (equivalent to ₱91,211 in 2021). The company grew into a multimillion corporation that produced the majority of jeepneys in the Philippines.
Leonardo Salvador Sarao (13 April 1921 – 31 July 2001) was the founder and owner of the Sarao Motors, a company known for designing, manufacturing and selling the jeepney, the most popular mode of transportation in the Philippines.
In assembly-built jeepneys (notably, those built by Sarao Motors and Francisco Motors), the passenger capacity reached a maximum of fourteen to eighteen (including two up front). These high-capacity jeepneys were the first versions to be referred to as "Public Utility Jeepneys" (PUJ) or "passenger-type" jeeps. [ 10 ]
The company was established in 1986 as the SBS Radio Network Inc. (Sarao Broadcasting Systems), co-owned by the Sarao family (owner of Las Piñas-based Sarao Motors) and the Vera family (original owners of FBS Radio Network). [2]
