The highway begins at the San Antonio–Leon Valley city limits and runs east for approximately a half mile to State Highway 16 (Bandera Road). Spur 471 is known locally as Grissom Road . An Earlier Spur 471 was designated on October 1, 1968, from I-20 in Colorado City to Loop 377 .
Castroville is a city in Medina County, Texas, United States. Its population was 2,954 at the 2020 census, [5] up from 2,680 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Antonio–New Braunfels, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. Castroville was founded by Alsatian-Texans, who came to Texas during the German emigration period of the mid-1800s.
Castroville was established in 1844 by Henri Castro, an empresario of the Republic of Texas, who brought several dozen European families from the Upper Rhine valley regions of Alsace and Baden to populate his land grant along the Medina River, some 25 miles (40 km) west of San Antonio.

He made it to San Antonio in July 1844 to meet with the colonists and was escorted by the Texas Rangers to inspect his land grant. The first of Castro's colonists arrived at the land on September 2, 1844. [5] A grant covering 3,878,000 acres over 5,000 square miles went to Henry Francis Fisher and Burchard Miller.
Joseph Merritt was born April 19, 1851. He was publisher for the Monterey Democrat and the Castroville Argus. In 1882, he was editor of the San Jose Mercury. In 1884, he was on the editorial staff of the San Jose Daily Herald. He married Annie Phillips in 1872. He died at the age of 36. [citation needed] Manuel R. Merritt was born June 8, 1855.
