    Hello all I just wanted some DPs on what counts as a department store for this category. Besides Macy, JCpenny, Nordstrom, etc. Which stores count? Would Target and Walmart be eligible? Clothing stores like h&m and forever 21?

    The definition in the fine print was "Department stores are defined as retailers selling a wide variety of merchandise, with separate checkout counters in each department" I'm sure there are stores they'll approve for the 5% and aren't on this list.

    OP, just use the card at a few different stores you'd actually shop at and see if you get the extra points. That will give you more useful information than trying to build some nationwide database. Note that some merchants will be broadly categorized as "grocery" and yet not get bonus points. This may include convenience stores, liquor stores, etc.

    Just a quick update. I talked to the Amex Membership Rewards people. They asked me to make a list of the transactions that did not code as 4x points but were restaurants or grocery stores. Once a provide a list, their investigations department will research and then approve or deny the additional points.

    That would be my interpretation as well. Right now all of the (non-Visa) store cards have unique 10 or 12 digit account numbers on the old system they've been using for literally decades.
