Ash is a young man who travels with various companions, aiming to fulfill his dream to become a Pokémon Master; his Pokémon lineup constantly changes over the course of the series, with its sole constant member being Pikachu, Ash's first Pokémon. Ash is loosely based on Red, the player character from the Generation I games Pokémon Red and Blue.
Ash then sends out Bulbasaur, and then Bulbasaur and Solrock knock out each other. So it comes down to the final battle: Pikachu vs. Regice. He returns in Journeys where he participates in a Battle Royal against Ash, but goes as himself instead of Masked Royal since he wanted Ash to be the star of the battle.
The appearance of Woodate Comet approaches, so Ash, Iris, Cilan, and Alexa go stake out the ruins where the legendary hero it is named after first spotted it. However, they must deal with several Ghost Pokémon and Team Rocket who are once again trying to capture Pikachu.
As Ash struggles to bond with Pikachu, who acts aloof and openly distrusts him, the two stumble upon a wild Pidgey, and Ash unsuccessfully tries to catch it by throwing a Poké Ball. Ash uses his Pokédex and learns that in order to catch a Pokémon via a Poké Ball, a trainer must first use their Pokémon to battle it, thereby weakening it.
Ash and May reconnect the remaining crystals but notice one is missing. While escaping the flood, Ash finds the last crystal in a fountain. He puts Pikachu, May, and Manaphy in an air capsule that used to be part of Phantom's submarine before diving into the completely flooded crown chamber and reconnecting the crystal, causing Samiya to rise ...
Rudy moves in to court Misty after she helps rescue his younger sister, Mahri. While Ash battles for the Spike Shell Badge, Misty considers the tempting offer to stay on the island with Rudy and Mahri forever. Later, Rudy understands that Misty wants to go with Ash. In the end, Rudy compliments that Ash is lucky before they say their goodbyes.
Heading to Violet City for the first gym, Ash and company meet Casey, a new trainer and baseball fan who eagerly challenges Ash to a battle. When Ash easily beats all three of her Pokémon with just his Charizard, she gets upset and makes an alliance with Team Rocket to get back at Ash, until she finds out that Team Rocket was just using her.
