Carlisle Castle is a stone keep medieval fortress located in the city of Carlisle near the ruins of Hadrian's Wall. First built during the reign of William II in 1092 [ 1 ] and rebuilt in stone under Henry I in 1122, the castle is over 930 years old and has been the scene of many episodes in British history .

The house is built in stone from Wetheral Priory, it was extended in the early 18th century, and alterations were made in 1888 by C. J. Ferguson. The stone is red sandstone, it is on a chamfered plinth, and the house has quoins and a green slate roof with coped gables; the extension is in brick. There are two storeys and five bays in a double span.
Carlisle was first fortified in 72 CE, when a timber and earth Roman fort was built there; in 1092, William II of England constructed a stone castle on the same site, subsequently expanded by his successors.

The castle was built by Earl Thomas of Lancaster, taking advantage of the site's natural defences and the existing earthworks of an Iron Age fort. The defences were expanded in the 1380s by John of Gaunt, the Duke of Lancaster. It suffered much damage during the Wars of the Roses and by the 16th century it was a ruins.
