Corinth is believed to have painted the Self-Portrait with Skeleton in response to the Self-Portrait with Death Playing the Fiddle (1872), by the Swiss painter Arnold Böcklin, who was widely admired back then in Germany. Böcklin depicted the skeleton in his work as a live figure, he plays the violin while the artist listens to it.

Lovis Corinth painted the Portrait of Ohm Friedrich Corinth during a stay with his uncle in July 1900. [2] Lovis Corinth came from an agricultural family in Tapiau in East Prussia, today Gwardeisk. His father was a farmer and, through marriage to his mother, a widow, also a local tanner. Corinth's relatives lived in the surrounding villages.
