Lapu-Lapu, officially the City of Lapu-Lapu (Cebuano: Dakbayan sa Lapu-Lapu; Filipino: Lungsod ng Lapu-Lapu), is a highly urbanized city in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 497,604 people. [2] It was formerly known as Opon, the city being renamed to its present name in 1961.
It was later renamed as the city of Lapu-Lapu by means of the Republic Act 3134, signed by Pres. Carlos P. Garcia on June 17, 1961. Congressman Manuel A. Zosa, the representative of the Sixth District of Cebu, sponsored the Bill converting the former municipality of Opon into the present day City of Lapu-Lapu. [4]

On September 19, 2019, Megaworld Corporation announced that their plan to build a PHP 1.5 billion two-level mall in its 30-hectare Mactan Newtown development in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu. It will have a 1.4-hectare man-made lagoon at the center with floating boardwalks and a bridge that will connect both sides of the mall. [2]
