Shuteye Lookout was established by the U.S. Forest Service in 1907. The lookout was the first of its kind in the Sierra. Daily hikes to the summit were required before a permanent structure was built in 1909. [7] The availability of a permanent fire lookout station replaced the earlier practice of constant fire patrol by forest rangers. [8]

In California alone, some 250 lookout towers and cabs were built by CCC workers between 1933 and 1942. [4] The heyday of fire lookout towers was from 1930 through 1950.
The Chews Ridge Lookout is located at the northern end of the Santa Lucia Range of the Los Padres National Forest, about 50 miles (80 km) southeast of Monterey, California, and approximately 30 miles (48 km) west of Highway 101. The current tower was built in 1929 and staffed until around 1990.
