The Capture of Nam Định (27 March 1883), a confrontation between the French and the Vietnamese, was one of the early engagements of the Tonkin Campaign (1883–86). In 1901, the Presidential Palace was built. On September 2, 1945, Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence at Ba Dinh Square to approximately 500,000 people. Following his death in 1969, the preserved body of Ho Chi Minh was put on display in the Hồ Chí Minh Mausoleum, located in Ba Dinh Square, in 1975. [7] [8]
