FVRL has 15 library branches, two bookmobiles, and online services for its 147,000 patrons. The service area includes Clark, Klickitat, and Skamania counties, and portions of Cowlitz County. The library district was established in 1950 as the first inter-county rural library district in Washington.
The Clark County Public Library traces its beginnings to the Springfield Lyceum in 1841 in Springfield, Ohio. [1] Various short-lived library associations followed and the library found a more permanent home on the second floor of Black's Opera House. The library housed 3,300 volumes when it opened to the public at this location in 1872.

The mercantile (general store) was built in 1942 and originally sold household staples and sundries to residents who were mostly miners at the Blue Diamond Mine.
