On 18 January 1935, the British Admiralty presented Singapore with an Acacia-class sloop, HMS Laburnum, to serve as the Reserve's Headquarters and drill ship. It was berthed at the Telok Ayer Basin. HMS Laburnum was sunk in February 1942, prior to the capitulation of Singapore at the beginning of Second World War activities in the Pacific.

During her first post-war refit in 1924, Malaya saw the removal of her 3-inch guns and mainmast searchlight platforms and addition of 4-inch high-angle guns. A refit in 1926 added another pair of 4-inch guns, the HACS anti-aircraft fire control system, a new fore-top, a stump fore-topmast, and re-positioned the 15-inch gunnery director.
Woodlands Naval Base was a military base of the Royal Malaysian Navy in Woodlands, Singapore.It is on the opposite side of the Singapore Strait from Johor Bahru.This base served as the first headquarters of the Royal Navy Malay Section (then name of the Royal Malaysian Navy) from 1952 until 9 September 1984, when the headquarters relocated to Lumut, Perak.
The group was made famous by their audacious raid on 2 July 2000 on a camp of Malaysian Army Reserve in the early hours of the morning and stealing weapons from the armoury. The group was later cornered in the village of Sauk , Kuala Kangsar , Perak and was involved in a stand-off the against the Malaysian Army and Royal Malaysian Police forces.
