The Isle of Wight (/waɪt/ WYTE) is an island, English county and unitary authority in the English Channel, 2 to 5 miles (3 to 8 kilometres) off the coast of Hampshire, across the Solent. It is the largest and second-most populous island in England.

The borough councils were merged with the county council on 1 April 1995, to form a single unitary authority, the Isle of Wight Council. The only significant present-day administrative link with Hampshire is the police service, the Hampshire Constabulary, which is joint between Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. [citation needed]
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) is the statutory fire and rescue service for the county of Hampshire, including the cities of Southampton and Portsmouth, and the county of the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England.
The trust was formed on 1 October 2024 following the merger of Solent NHS Trust and Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust and also incorporates the community and mental health services formerly provided by the Isle of Wight NHS Trust. The merger was approved in November 2023 and was originally planned for April 2024, but was delayed twice.
