European route E16 is the designation of a main west-east road through Northern Ireland, Scotland, Norway and Sweden, from Derry to Gävle, via Belfast, Glasgow, Edinburgh, previously by ferry to Bergen, Voss, through the Gudvanga Tunnel and the Lærdal Tunnel (the world's longest road tunnel), Lærdal, over Filefjell to Fagernes, Hønefoss, Gardermoen and Kongsvinger.

The European route E1 in the Republic of Ireland is a series of roads, part of the International E-road network running in a north south axis on the Irish east coast. It runs through five counties starting on the British border with the province of Northern Ireland at Dundalk, coming from Belfast and Larne.
The main roads in Northern Ireland are signed "M"/"A"/"B" as in Great Britain. Whereas the roads in Great Britain are numbered according to a zonal system , there is no available explanation for the allocation of road numbers in Northern Ireland, [ 1 ] though their numbering is separate from the system in England , Scotland and Wales .

The major routes were established before Irish independence and consequently take little cognisance of the border other than a change of identification number and street furniture. The M2 has the busiest sections of any road or motorway in Northern Ireland. The M2 is one of Northern Ireland's most important motorways, forming most of the main route from Belfast city to both Belfast International Airport and less than a quarter of the way to Derry. It forms part of the unsigned European route E01, E16 and E18 roads.
