Ophelia DeVore (August 12, 1921 – February 28, 2014) was an American businesswoman, publisher, and model. [1] She was the first model of African-American descent in the United States. In 1946, she helped establish the Grace Del Marco Agency, one of the first modeling agencies in America.
For over three decades Jackman worked as a model, most notably for Ophelia DeVore's The Grace Del Marco Agency. He was featured in Winold Reiss' drawing A College Lad (1925). [5] Jackman was the model for Carl Van Vechten's protagonist in Nigger Heaven (1926). He also appeared as a character in Wallace Thurman's novel Infants of Spring (1932). [4]
Europe at the time was seen as more accepting of white-passing Black models, such as Ophelia Devore, who had modeled herself and had her own agency's models working in Paris, or Dorothea Church in the 1950s and unmistakably African-American models like Dolores Francine Rhiney , who was the first Black model to walk on the European catwalk.
Prior to her work in news and network television, Haynes started with the Ophelia DeVore Charm and Modeling Agency in the early 1950s. [6] DeVore was known for being one of the first to market products to ethnic consumers and use black models during the age of racial segregation and the civil rights movements.
