Hicks was born in Newtown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania and became a portrait painter, but is also known for genre works. [1] He is known for his portrait of Abraham Lincoln that was engraved by Leopold Grozelier. Charles Henry Yewell studied with him for a time. [2] He died on October 8, 1890.
Hicks' easel paintings were often made for family and friends, not for sale, and decorative painting remained his main source of income. [ 7 ] In 1827, a schism formed within the Religious Society of Friends, between Hicksites (named after Edward Hicks' cousin Elias Hicks ) and Orthodox Friends. [ 8 ]
