The ETV&G railyard and depot, as it appeared on an 1886 map of Knoxville. The railroad's impact on Knoxville's development was swift. The city's population more than doubled from just over 2,000 in 1850 to over 4,000 in 1860. [6] After the war, the city's wholesaling sector expanded rapidly.
The company continued modest expansion throughout the 1990s, acquiring new railroads in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky. These new additions included the Atlantic & Gulf in 1991, the H&S in 1992, the Nash County Railroad in 1994, and the Georgia & Florida in 1995. [ 2 ]

The Knoxville Southern Railroad, organized in 1887, completed a line between Knoxville, Tennessee, and the Georgia border in 1890. [5] The gap was closed in 1905 by the Knoxville, La Follette and Jellico Railroad, which completed a new line between Jellico to Knoxville. [4]
