In 1970 the company's name was changed to Lufkin Industries, and three divisions were established: Machinery, Trailer, and Automotive/Industrial Supplies. The company prospered in the 1970s, growing to 3,800 employees and annual sales of over $364 million by the early 1980s. [2] In 2013, Lufkin was acquired by General Electric for $3.3 billion. [3]
His first invention, patented April 25, 1871, was a portable grain cleaner and separator. Farmers had previously had to haul their grain into town to have it cleaned and separated, but the cleaner and separator could now be brought to the grain. The machine won first prize at the California State Fair in 1871.
