The Black and White Minstrel Show is a British light entertainment show on BBC prime-time television that ran from 1958 to 1978. The weekly variety show presented traditional American minstrel and country songs, as well as show tunes and music hall numbers, lavishly costumed and often presented with cast members in blackface.
In 1957, the George Mitchell Minstrels first appeared at the annual Earl's Court Radio Show, a programme which was televised. From 1958, the Minstrels, in red make-up which looked black on camera, became an enormous hit, [ 4 ] with a peak viewing audience of 16.5 million viewers in 1964.
John Boulter is a British tenor best known for his appearances as a soloist in the BBC's long-running variety series The Black and White Minstrel Show.Along with bass Tony Mercer and baritone Dai Francis, Boulter was one of the show's three front men.
Dai Francis (23 February 1928 – 27 November 2003) was a Welsh singer, best known for his performances with the Black and White Minstrels. [1] Francis was born in Glynneath, Glamorgan, the son of a music hall entertainer. Dai himself began performing at the age of ten, "blacking up" to sing Dixieland-style numbers.
They appeared on the early series of the Billy Cotton Band Show [2] and appeared in all 20 series of The Black and White Minstrel Show. The Toppers became celebrities in their own right. They hosted their own television show, Toppers About Town, in which the dance troupe visited notable places around London. [3]
