The new facility, which was designed by Sydney Tattle and built by Chapman, Lower and Peptic, [2] was officially opened by Neville Chamberlain MP, Minister for Health, as the Surrey County Sanatorium on 20 July 1928. The foundation stone for the hospital was laid by Charles Richard Sumner, Bishop of Winchester, at a site donated by the Earl of Onslow in Farnham Road in Guildford in 1863. [2] The 60-bed hospital was designed by Edward Ward Lower drawing on the ideas of Florence Nightingale and was opened as the Royal Surrey County Hospital in April 1866. [3]
Sutton Place, 3 miles (4.8 km) north-east [n 1] of Guildford in Surrey, is a large Grade I listed [1] Tudor prodigy house built c. 1525 [2] by Sir Richard Weston (d. 1541), a courtier of Henry VIII. It is of importance to art history in showing some of the earliest traces of Italianate Renaissance design elements in English architecture.
