Late-night schedules after the 23:00 news (Kveldsnytt) consist primarily of documentaries and drama shows. The channel de jure signs off sometime between 04:30 and 05:00, during which time it shows a TV guide, a news feed, and an audio simulcast of NRK P1 until it signs back on at 06:30 for the morning news.

NRK initially set out to cover the entire country and had a monopoly on broadcasting in Norway. The monopoly came under intense pressure when Norwegian TV companies began broadcasting from abroad in addition to international cable TV. Cable TV started in 1982 and satellite TV in 1986 (the launch of TV3 in 1987 and TVNorge in 1988).
As of November 2023, episodes are broadcast more or less simultaneously on NRK1, SVT2, and NRK Sámi Radio in the afternoon, usually at 17:30. Broadcasts in Finland were moved from Yle Teema & Fem to Yle TV1 at some point in the late 2010s, where it airs as a late night newscast; and to TV Finland, where it airs during daytime the following day.
A second television channel, TV 2 was started in 1992. NRK started a second television channel, NRK2 in 1996. NRK1 goes out to 99,8% of all households, while TV2 has a 92% coverage and NRK2 and NRK3/NRK Super has 80% coverage. There are today 24 local television channels in the country, all terrestrially transmitted.
