Spearfish (Lakota: Hočhápȟe [5]) is a city in Lawrence County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 12,193 at the time of the 2020 census, making it the 10th most populous city in South Dakota. [6] Spearfish is the largest city in Lawrence County and the home of Black Hills State University.
Spearfish Canyon is a deep but narrow gorge carved by Spearfish Creek located in Lawrence County, South Dakota, U.S., just south of Spearfish. The canyon is located within the Black Hills , located on the northern edge of the Black Hills National Forest .
The area is about 15 miles (24 km) southwest of Spearfish or about 14.5 miles (23.3 km) west of Lead, just west of Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway (U.S. 14A). Wildlife found in the area include: Elk, Bald eagle, White-tailed deer, Mule deer, Coyote, Beaver, Bighorn sheep, Mountain goat, and Mountain lion. [3]
Chester Allan Poage (July 4, 1980 – March 13, 2000) [1] was an American man who was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered by three men in Spearfish, South Dakota, on March 13, 2000. Elijah Page, Briley Piper, and Darrell Hoadley were convicted of the torture and murder of Poage.
The center opened as the Spearfish National Fish Hatchery in 1896 and was under the scope of the newly founded National Fish Hatchery System. [1] The complex included 17 ponds and a main hatchery building; these facilities used spring water. [6] In late July 1899, 100,000 blackspotted trout eggs arrived to begin populating the hatchery.
