The 1978–79 season was the 55th season in the existence of AEK Athens F.C. and the 20th consecutive season in the top flight of Greek football.They competed in the Alpha Ethniki, the Greek Cup and the European Cup.
Mavros is widely regarded as one of the best footballers in Greece having scored a record number of 260 goals in the Greek championship [1] and played for the World XI in 1984. His nickname was "the God" (Greek: Θεός), or "Theomas" (Greek: "Θεωμάς"). In 2012 he also served as the president of AEK Athens.
Note: Thomas Mavros became the 8th footballer to score 5 goals in a single match, since the establishment of the championship as a national division and the second player of AEK Athens, after Kostas Nestoridis. It was the second time Mavros scored 5 goals in an official match for AEK, after a cup game against Irodotos on 20 April 1983.

The 1978–79 Alpha Ethniki was the 43rd season of the highest football league of Greece. The season began on 3 September 1978 and ended on 3 June 1979. AEK Athens won their second consecutive and seventh Greek title.
