English draughts (British English) or checkers (American English), also called straight checkers or simply draughts, [note 1] is a form of the strategy board game checkers (or draughts). It is played on an 8×8 checkerboard with 12 pieces per side.
It is organised by the World Checkers/Draughts Federation. The first edition of the men's championship was held in the 1840s, [1] predating the men's Draughts World Championship by several decades. The women's championship has been held since 1986. There are championships held in two versions.
The World Draughts Federation (Fédération Mondiale du Jeu de Dames) FMJD, is the international body uniting national draughts federations. It was founded in 1947 by four Federations: France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland.
