The La Mama Theatre near the University of Melbourne was created by director Betty Burstall in 1967 to recreate the vibrancy and immediacy of the small on-off Broadway ventures in New York. Betty Margaret Burstall AM (born Betty Margaret Rogers 4 February 1926 – 14 June 2013) was an Australian theatre director who founded the La Mama Theatre in Melbourne in 1967. [1] Burstall and her theatre are credited with leading the growth of contemporary theatre in Melbourne during the 1960s and 1970s.
Dimboola is a play by the Australian author Jack Hibberd.It premiered in 1969 at La Mama Theatre under the direction of Graeme Blundell. [1] The whole action of the play supposedly takes place at a real wedding at which the actors represent the families of the bride and groom and the audience are "invited guests".
In his early years, Blundell worked at La Mama Theatre, the Pram Factory, Hoopla, the Playbox Theatre Company, and the Melbourne Theatre Company. He directed and acted in the premiere performance of Jack Hibberd's play Dimboola at La Mama. His first television appearance was as an uncredited extra in the debut episode of Homicide (1964).
