The school, previously known as Larchmont School and at one time having middle school grades, [6] began in October 1913. Originally a part of the Tanner’s Creek School Board, it became a part of the Norfolk school district after Norfolk annexed the area on January 1, 1923. [ 7 ]
The only independent government school district under Virginia law is the Eastern Virginia Medical College. All of the K-12 school districts are classified as dependent public school systems by the U.S. Census Bureau. [2]

Founded in 1952, [1] Norfolk Christian Schools (NCS) is a private, coeducational Christian day school serving Grades K3 through 12. The school is recognized by the Virginia State Board of Education as an accredited school and is accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools, and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
Built in 1922 to a design by the local architectural firm of Calrow, Wrenn, and Tazewell, it was the first junior high school to be built by the city school administration. The school is named for James Blair, one of the founders of Virginia's College of William and Mary, and was converted to a middle school in the 1980s. [2]
NB: James City County and the City of Williamsburg operate a joint school system. All of the district's high schools have "Williamsburg" postal addresses, but are located in the County. Jamestown High School, Williamsburg; Lafayette High School, Williamsburg; Warhill High School, Williamsburg (opened in 2007)
