The original Douglas Hospital opened with 15 patient beds. In 1974, construction was completed on the new Douglas General Hospital, increasing the number of beds to 98. The new hospital opened in 1975. In 1976, Douglas Hospital opened its birthing center. It became one of the first hospitals in the nation where mothers and newborns roomed together.
The hospital opened in November 1983 [3] as North Fulton Medical Center, a one-story, 108,734 square foot facility providing 24-hour emergency services, as well as obstetrical services, intensive care, coronary care and other out-patient services. [6]
In 2020, Wellstar Kennestone Regional Medical Center opened a 200+ bed Emergency Department connected by a pedestrian bridge to the main hospital. With its 166 beds, the new 266,000 square foot Emergency Department became the largest emergency department in Georgia and one of the largest in the United States.
Grady Memorial Hospital was founded in 1890 and opened in 1892, as an outgrowth of the Atlanta Benevolent Home. It is named for Henry W. Grady, an Atlanta Constitution journalist and later owner who became a major force in Georgia politics and advocated for a public city hospital. At the time of opening, the hospital officially had 14 rooms.
