This bat is small enough to fit in a person's hand, weighing 5.3 and 6.0 grams (0.19 and 0.21 oz). Its nostrils are tube-shaped. [3] Its color pattern is unique for the regional habitat: a white underbelly, black head, and dark back. [8]
The weight is about 15 g. It has three distinctive white spots on its black back. With ears that can grow up to 4 cm, it is said to have the largest ears of any bat species in North America. [2] The spotted bat's mating season is in autumn and the females produce their offspring (usually one juvenile) in June or July.
The bats’ names can play a larger role in the contest than their cuteness. Last year’s winner was a female Townsend’s big-eared bat from southern Oregon dubbed “William ShakespEAR”.
This medium-sized bat is predominantly black (including the wings, ears, interfemoral membrane, and fur) with white-tipped hairs. The basal upper half of its tail membrane is densely furred. This gives the bat a frosted appearance and its common namesake. This species has a flattened skull with a broad rostrum. [3]
