Since independence, Armenia has been developing its internal highway network. The "North-South Road Corridor Investment Program" is a major infrastructure project which aims at connecting the southern border of Armenia with its northern by means of a 556 km-long Meghri-Yerevan-Bavra highway.
At metro stations, however, signage is available in Armenian, English, and Russian. There is a noticeable lack of separate bus lanes in the city. The total length of the Armenian road network is 8,140 km (5,060 mi), 96.7% of which is asphalted. For every 1,000 km 2 (390 sq mi) of national territory, there are 258 km (160 mi) of roads. Armenia is a member of the International Road Transport Union and the TIR Convention.
