In 1705, Pope Clement XI named Patriarch Carlos de Borja Centellas the Military Vicar (General) of the Spanish Armies.Beginning in 1736, Pope Clement XII merged the office of Vicar General of the Spanish Armies with the Patriarchate of the West Indies pro tempore et ad septennium, that is, "temporarily for seven years", and added to those titles the Royal Palace's Chaplaincy in 1741.

On 6 April 1762 he was appointed Titular Archbishop of Neocaesarea in Ponto and Patriarch of the West Indies. [4] As patriarch, he replaced Álvaro de Mendoza Caamaño Sotomayor, who had died on 23 January 1761. [5] He was military vicar of Spain from 1762 until his death. He was a judge of the Royal Chapel. Ramón José de Arce y Rebollar (1757 – 1844) was a Spanish churchman who served as Archbishop of Burgos from 1797 to 1801; as Grand Inquisitor of the Spanish Inquisition from 1797 to 1808; as Archbishop of Zaragoza from 1800 to 1816; [1] [2] and as Patriarch of the West Indies from 1806 to 1815.
