There were 103 Concordias produced between 1938 and 1966, making the Concordia yawl class the largest class of large one-design wooden sailboats. [2] The first four Concordias were produced in Massachusetts. Concordia commissioned the Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard in Lemwerder, Germany, to build the remaining 99 (26 of them as a 41' Model).
Strip-built, or "strip-plank epoxy", is a method of boat building. [1] Also known as cold molding, the strip-built method is commonly used for canoes and kayaks, but also suitable for larger boats. The process involves securing narrow, flexible strips of wood edge-to-edge around temporary formers.
The Frosty is a racing sailboat, usually built of wood, using two 4 by 8 ft (1.2 by 2.4 m) sheets of 0.25 in (6.4 mm) plywood and assembled using an epoxy stitch and glue technique. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] The design has a pram hull with no chines or internal framing and has only one bulkhead.
The one sheet boat (OSB, cf. oriented strand board) is an outgrowth of the stitch and glue technique. The OSB is a boat that can be built using a single sheet of 4 foot by 8 foot plywood (1.22 m × 2.44 m). Some additional wood is often used, for supports, chines, or as a transom, though some can be built entirely with the sheet of plywood ...
The original prototype Gull (the "Jolly Roger") was built by Ian Proctor to teach his own children the skills of dinghy sailing. This became a production boat, often built from a kit, and produced by Smallcraft of Blockley. A GRP version was produced from 1966 but, being a near-exact copy of the wooden boat, was not well suited to GRP manufacture.
The boat was proposed for building in ferro-cement construction at that time, but later changed to fiberglass, although wooden examples with caravel planking were also built. [ 11 ] The design is a recreational keelboat , built predominantly of fiberglass, with wood trim.
