Originally known as the UTSA Children's Chorus, the chorus operated with only 33 singers. As the program grew, it eventually split off and the Children's Chorus of San Antonio was officially created as an independent musical non-profit organization in 1993. This article is based on interviews with Florence Kopleff, who was a member of the Robert Shaw Chorale throughout its existence and served as administrative assistant to Mr. Shaw; and on recollections of John W. Cooledge, a member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Chamber Chorus, and of the Robert Shaw Chamber Singers throughout the existence of that group.
In both 1999 and 2003, the Chorus received ASCAP awards for adventurous programming- the first group to receive the award twice, [5] and between 1987 and 2001, they performed three times for the national convention of the American Choral Directors' Association.
