La Plata is a city in Macon County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,257 at the 2020 census, [5] down from 1,366 in 2010. La Plata is located next to the Adair County line and is on a mainline of the BNSF Railway. The first known African American newspaper in Missouri was the Welcome Friend of St. Louis, which was in circulation by 1870. [1] Yet the first surviving issue of any such newspaper dates from 20 years later in 1890, when the sole surviving issue of The American Negro of Springfield was published.
Following Swain's death in 1972 ownership and operation of the newspaper passed to his son E. E. Swain, Jr. In 1990 the Daily Express was sold to American Publishing Company, although a Swain, E. E.'s grandson Tony, still remained as pressroom supervisor. Gatehouse Media (formerly Liberty Media Group) assumed operation of the newspaper in 1998.
