Griffith graduated from BYU in 1978 with a bachelor's degree, summa cum laude. While at BYU, Griffith took a two-year leave of absence to serve as an LDS Church missionary in South Africa. Griffith studied law at the University of Virginia School of Law, where he was an editor of the Virginia Law Review. He graduated in 1985 with a Juris Doctor.
