The Tang dynasty was interrupted by the reign of Empress Wu Zetian (AD 690–705), who after deposing her sons, declared herself the founder of a Wu Zhou dynasty (武周); the Tang dynasty was resumed by her sons following her abdication. The dynasty was named for the family title: the Li (李) family were the Dukes of Tang.

Cheng Yaojin was born during the Sui dynasty in Dong'e County (東阿縣), Ji Prefecture (濟州), which is located southwest of present-day Dongping County, Tai'an, Shandong. He was highly skilled in horse-riding and using the shuo (槊; a type of long spear).
He was the father of Gaozu, the founding emperor of the Tang dynasty. His father, Li Hu (李虎), served as a major general under the Western Wei general Yuwen Tai, and was created the Duke of Longxi in 554; Li Bing eventually inherited his father's title, and became the Duke of Tang (唐國公) in 22 September 564.
