Amphimallon solstitiale, also known as the summer chafer or European june beetle, is a beetle similar to the cockchafer but much smaller, approximately 20 millimetres (0.79 in) in length. They are declining in numbers now, but where found they are often seen in large numbers.
The beetles smell odors or chemicals from plants that first draw them in. When they feed on the leaves, additional volatiles from the plant are released into the air that then attract more beetles.
Some Pyrgotidae flies pursue the beetles in flight to lay an egg on the beetle's back under the elytra where the beetle cannot reach it. The egg hatches and the fly larva enters the body cavity of the beetle, feeding on and eventually killing the host before pupating. A species of bee fly, Exoprosopa fasciata, is also a parasite of this genus.
Grapevine beetles are common in the north and central United States and eastern Canada, but do relatively little damage to their host plants. The beetles fly at a fast speed, usually in a curving flight. The adult beetle is approximately 2.5 centimetres (1 inch) long, but can reach 3 cm (1.2 in) occasionally.
Generally numerous, these metallic green and brown insects are known to feed on over 300 species of plants, including roses, ornamental trees, flower beds, orchards, vineyards and vegetable gardens.
Agriotes sputator [1] is a species of click beetle, commonly known as the common click beetle. [2] The adult beetle is brown and inconspicuous, and the larvae live in the soil and are known as wireworms. They are agricultural pests that devour the roots and underground parts of many crops and other plants.
