The ironhead was a Harley-Davidson motorcycle engine, so named because of the composition of the cylinder heads (Iron instead of Aluminium). The engine is a two-cylinder, two valves per cylinder, pushrod V-twin. It was produced from 1957 until 1985 and was replaced by the Evolution engine in 1986.
Since then, Buell has used modified Harley-Davidson engines, primarily from the Sportster, to power its motorcycles. The Buell motorcycle factory in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Most Buell motorcycles use four-stroke air-cooled V-twin engines, originally built for XR1000 Sportster. After these were depleted, a basic 1200 Sportster engine was used.
Also available in the Sportster model beginning in 1986, it was made in the 1,100 cc (67 cu in) displacement until 1988 and is still made in the 883 cc (53.9 cu in) and 1,200 cc (73 cu in) [1] displacements for the Harley-Davidson Sportster, replacing the ironhead Sportster engine.
A variant of the Revolution Max called the 1250T [3] saw use in the Sportster S, the first motorcycle under the Sportster nameplate to receive a new engine since 1986. [4] A 975cc version of the engine was announced for an upcoming streetfighter motorcycle called the Bronx, but that bike has been put on hold and may be cancelled. [5]
