Birla Mandir in Kolkata, India, is a Hindu temple on Asutosh Chowdhury Avenue, Ballygunge, built by the industrialist Birla family. [1] It is dedicated to Vishnu avatars such as Rama and Krishna . This temple is open in the morning from 5.30 A.M. to 11 A.M. and in the evening from 4 .30 P.M. to 9 P.M.

The University of Calcutta granted affiliation w.e.f. 1968-69 session. In 1969, the two institutions were amalgamated into one college under the name & style of Birla College of Science and Education. The college was managed by Vidyamandir Society through a Governing Body formed for this purpose with Sri L.N.Birla as its President.
It was established in 1857. There are several colleges and institutes that are affiliated to this university. At present, there are approximately 160 institutes which comes under this university, which are mostly located in the districts of Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, and South 24 Parganas. [1] [2]

Large chunks of Ballygunge, Sunny Park, Rainey Park and Southern Avenue were developed during the 1930s and 1940s. Many of the mansions in Ballygunge, Bhowanipore and Alipore were built by the city's Bengali and new Marwari elite who wanted to move from the "dirtier sections of north Calcutta to the more fashionable areas in the south".
